How the verdict works: quality is estimated as effective bits per pixel — bitrate ÷ (width × height × fps) — scaled by encoder efficiency (HEVC ≈ 30–40% and AV1 ≈ 40–50% more efficient than H.264) and content motion. Around 0.07 effective bpp looks clean for typical content; below ~0.045 blocking becomes visible in motion. The Streaming Bitrate Calculator recommends a bitrate and full encoder settings for live streaming or local recording. Pick your platform (Twitch, YouTube Live, Kick, Facebook or custom RTMP), resolution and frame rate, encoder — x264 on the CPU, NVIDIA NVENC in H.264, HEVC or AV1 flavors, AMD AMF, Intel QuickSync/Arc, or FFmpeg's x265 and SVT-AV1 — and how much motion your content has. It computes the effective bits-per-pixel your stream would deliver, adjusted for each encoder's efficiency (HEVC is roughly 30–40% more efficient than H.264, AV1 40–50%), checks it against the platform's ingest cap and a 75% safety share of your upload speed, and gives a verdict: crisp, workable, or starved — with a concrete fallback resolution when the math doesn't work. A settings panel spells out what to type into OBS: rate control, keyframe interval, encoder preset, profile and audio bitrate. Recording mode switches the advice to constant-quality (CQP/CRF) with realistic file-size expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why only 75% of my upload speed?
Streams share the connection with game traffic, voice chat, alerts and everything else on the network, and upload speeds fluctuate. Capping the stream at ~75% of measured upload prevents dropped frames when the connection dips.
Is AV1 or HEVC always better than H.264?
At the same bitrate, yes — but the platform has to accept it. Twitch's standard ingest is H.264 at 6,000 kbps, with HEVC/AV1 via Enhanced Broadcasting; YouTube accepts all three. For recording, AV1/HEVC roughly halves file size, as long as your editor handles it.
CBR for streaming but CQP for recording — why?
Streaming platforms want a steady, predictable bitrate (CBR). Local recording has no network constraint, so constant-quality modes spend bits only where the picture needs them — better quality per gigabyte.
